The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will construct a 121 km long Guwahati Ring Road at a cost of Rs 7,000 crore.

In this regard, the NHAI has signed concession agreement with Dineshchandra R Agrawal Infracon Pvt. Ltd.

The project will built under the build-operate-toll (BOT) mode at a total cost of Rs. 5,729 crore and will have a concession period of 30 years with a construction period of four years, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said in a statement on Thursday (3 April).

“Providing impetus to the project, the state government of Assam will bear 50 per cent of land cost, provide exemption from royalty on aggregates and state portion of GST contributing about Rs 1,270 crore,” the statement noted.

Thus, the gross project cost is about Rs 7,000 crore, the ministry added.

The Ring Road project will have three main components: 56 km long four-lane access-controlled Northern Guwahati Bypass, widening of existing 8 km bypass on NH-27 to six lanes from four lanes, and upgrading of existing 58 km bypass on NH-27.

A highlight of the project is a 3 km long major bridge over the Brahmaputra River, improving regional mobility.

After its construction, the Ring Road will provide an important by-pass for road traffic from West Bengal and Bihar to Silchar, Nagaland, and Tripura, ultimately decongesting Guwahati city and suburbs.

It will also provide smooth connectivity to major towns such as Siliguri, Silchar, Shillong, Jorhat, Tezpur, Jogigopha, and Barpeta.
