Security at key scientific and technical institutions in border regions of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat is set to be reinforced following a high-level review chaired by Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh.
The decision comes amid the prevailing security situation and aims to safeguard vital national infrastructure.
The minister, who holds multiple key portfolios including Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, convened a joint meeting with senior officials and department heads to assess preparedness at facilities under CSIR, DBT, IMD, and the Ministry of Earth Sciences, the press release stated.
Key institutes reviewed included CSIR-IIIM Jammu, CSIR-CSIO Chandigarh, CSIR-CLRI Jalandhar, IMTECH Chandigarh, NABI Mohali, and IMD centres in Srinagar and Leh.
Dr Singh highlighted the strategic importance of these institutes, stating, “Our scientific institutions are the backbone of national resilience. At a time like this, we must ensure they are secure, well-coordinated, and prepared for every possible eventuality.”
Upcoming examinations and research proposal calls have been postponed to accommodate affected researchers.
The IMD has also been directed to bolster security at installations in Srinagar and Leh. Additionally, institutes are to conduct blood donation drives, sensitisation programmes on self-defence, evacuation protocols, and mock drills.
The meeting, held in hybrid mode, saw participation from DST, DBT, CSIR, IMD, MoES, and institute directors. A comprehensive inventory of facilities in sensitive areas will be shared with national security agencies.
