On the 26th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas on Saturday (26 July), President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in honouring the courage and sacrifice of Indian soldiers who secured victory in the 1999 Kargil War, reported The Hindu.
“This day symbolises the extraordinary valour, courage, and steadfast determination of our jawans,” said President Murmu on X.
Leaders Salute Bravehearts
Prime Minister Modi called the occasion a reminder of the “unparalleled courage and valour" of India's soldiers who sacrificed their lives for defending the country’s pride.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid tribute to the “bravehearts who displayed extraordinary courage... in the toughest of terrains.”
Events at Drass War Memorial
Union Ministers Sanjay Seth and Mansukh Mandaviya joined a padyatra in Drass to commemorate the fallen heroes.
Families of martyrs gathered at Lamochen Viewpoint in Drass to pay heartfelt tributes to the heroes of the war.
The Indian Air Force released a tribute video and recalled its 1999 “Operation Safed Sagar,” highlighting its strategic impact without crossing international borders.
Voices from the States
Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami and Arunachal CM Pema Khandu paid respects, with Khandu describing Operation Vijay as “a story of young men climbing into the jaws of death with grit in their hearts and the tricolour in their hands.”
