Railway Ministry Approves Final Location Survey For New Rail Line In Sikkim From Melli To Dentam

The Railway Ministry has approved the final location survey for a proposed railway line from Melli to Dentam via Jorethang and Legship in Sikkim, an official statement confirmed on Saturday (10 May).
The Northeast Frontier Railway will undertake the survey at an approved cost of Rs 2.25 crore. This initiative marks a crucial step in extending rail connectivity to the southern and western regions of Sikkim, areas long underserved by national railway infrastructure, PTI reported.
The proposed line, with an estimated length of 75 km as per the preliminary feasibility assessment, is seen as a strategic continuation of the Sivok-Rangpo railway project, currently under construction and targeted for completion by 2027.
Melli, serving as a vital entry point to southern and western Sikkim, is poised to function as a key junction for this extension, ensuring seamless integration into the broader national railway network.
This move marks a major step forward in expanding rail connectivity to the southern and western regions of Sikkim, the statement read.
The project is expected to have far-reaching economic implications, particularly for towns like Gyalshing and nearby regions. It aims to enhance access, promote tourism, boost trade and create employment opportunities.
Tender processes for the survey works are anticipated to be initiated shortly.
