Tamil Nadu To Build State’s Longest Elevated Road Corridor Along East Coast Road, Linking Thiruvanmiyur To Uthandi

The Tamil Nadu State Highways Authority (TNSHA), set up last year to boost road infrastructure through private investment, has unveiled a major project, a 14.2 km four-lane flyover between Thiruvanmiyur and Uthandi along the East Coast Road (ECR), the New Indian Express reported.
At an estimated cost of Rs 2,100 crore, this will be the longest elevated corridor taken up by the state government.
The final expenditure could vary depending on land acquisition and related costs.
International tenders for the project were floated on Tuesday (26 August).
Once operational, the elevated stretch is expected to cut the current one-hour travel time to just 15–20 minutes, bringing relief to motorists heading towards Mamallapuram, Puducherry, Cuddalore and other destinations.
The flyover will run from Tidel Park to Uthandi, constructed on pillars along the road median. With a width ranging between 16 and 20 metres, it will also feature pedestrian pathways. Designed as a toll road under a closed-gate system, charges will be based on the distance travelled.
The project also provides an alternate route from Adyar to Kelambakkam, Thiruporur and Mambakkam via ECR, easing pressure on the already busy OMR. The corridor currently handles around 70,000 passenger car units per day.
Meanwhile, the six-laning of the 9.2 km stretch between Thiruvanmiyur and Akkarai is nearing completion, with 90 per cent of work already done.
The state’s current longest elevated corridor is the 7.3 km Madurai–Natham highway.
