Mumbai’s expanding metro network moved closer to operating more services this week with the arrival of the first trial train for Metro Line 4 and its extension, Line 4A.

The train coaches were transported to Anand Nagar in Thane and carefully lowered onto the tracks using heavy-duty cranes, The Free Press Journal reported.

Trial operations are expected to commence by September.

For the pilot phase, Yellow Line rakes are being pressed into service since their technical features align with those required for Line 4.

Earlier this year, the contract for dedicated rolling stock was awarded to a consortium comprising Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Alstom.

According to officials, the initial trial run will cover a 10 km stretch between Cadbury and Gaimukh.

This alignment encompasses ten stations: Cadbury, Majiwada, Kapurbawadi, Manpada, Tikuji Ni Wadi, Dongripada, Vijay Garden, Kasarvadavli, Gownipada, and Gaimukh.

Each station is expected to bring much-needed relief to commuters across Thane and Mumbai’s eastern corridor.

While the permanent depot for Lines 4 and 4A is still under construction at Mogharpada, where land was secured only in June, an interim facility with inspection pits has been set up beyond Gaimukh terminal to enable testing.

Metro Line 4 spans 32.3 km from Wadala to Kasarvadvali with 30 elevated stations, linking directly to the Eastern Express Highway, Central Railway, Monorail, and future Metro Lines 2B, 5 and 6. Its 2.7 km extension, Line 4A, pushes connectivity further into Thane up to Gaimukh.

Officials said the successful conduct of trials would allow faster commissioning of the corridor, which has faced repeated delays.
