Mumbai–Nagpur High-Speed Rail Corridor Back On The Horizon; Fadnavis Says Railways And Centre Are Reviewing It

The recent launch of the Vande Bharat Express between Nagpur (Ajni) and Pune has once again cast the spotlight on Maharashtra’s shelved Mumbai–Nagpur High-Speed Rail project.

The project has been in limbo for more than three years. With Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reaffirming its strategic value, the long-stalled mega plan may soon find fresh momentum, according to a Pune Pulse report.

Speaking at an event in Nagpur, Fadnavis underlined that the project is being actively reviewed in consultation with the Centre and the Railway Ministry.

Designed to operate alongside the Samruddhi Highway, the proposed corridor promises to slash the current travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur to just over two hours.

“The Ministry has already studied the route, and while 78 per cent of work can move swiftly, the remaining 22 per cent requires joint efforts,” he said, assuring that the government will shortly decide on the way forward.

Planned with cutting-edge specifications, the 749 km line will feature a 17.5 metre-wide track, 14 stations, 15 tunnels, and a passenger capacity of 750 per train, with maximum speeds of 330–350 km/h. The required land acquisition amounts to 1,245.61 hectares.

Officials note that while initial groundwork has already created both direct and indirect jobs in construction and allied services, accurate timelines and expenditure can only be gauged after further progress in civil, electrical, track, and signalling works.
