The central government has cleared an Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data Analytics‑driven pilot project aimed at reducing road accidents and improving enforcement efficiency in Uttar Pradesh.

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) on Monday (28 July) issued a formal no‑objection to the initiative, which will be implemented by public sector enterprise ITI Limited in partnership with global technology firm mLogica at zero cost to the state, reported PTI.

According to the Uttar Pradesh government, this marks the first time a state transport department in India is adopting an AI‑based road safety model.

The state has earmarked Rs 10 crore in its 2025‑26 Budget to establish a “data‑driven administrative model” for its Transport Department.

The six‑week prototype phase will consolidate accident records, weather data, vehicle telematics, driver histories and roadway details to develop AI models capable of predicting accident black spots, identifying root causes and generating real‑time policy dashboards.

The Transport Department also plans to deploy predictive policing, real‑time fraud detection and vehicle tracking to support on‑ground enforcement.

A comprehensive outcome report will be submitted to MoRTH, while continuous audits for data privacy, cybersecurity and compliance will be carried out.

The ministry has stipulated that the project must adhere strictly to the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, the Central Motor Vehicles Rules 1989, and all road safety SOPs, while incurring no financial liability for the Centre.

Transport Commissioner Brajesh Narain Singh said, “This initiative will place Uttar Pradesh at the forefront of data‑driven governance. By integrating the AI model beyond road safety into every core function of the department, we aim to make our state a national trailblazer in technological innovation.”
