The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully carried out two consecutive flight tests of the indigenously developed 'Pralay' missile on 28 and 29 July from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha.

The trials, conducted under User Evaluation Tests, were aimed at validating the missile system’s maximum and minimum range capabilities.

According to the official statement, the missiles followed their planned trajectories with “pinpoint accuracy”, meeting all objectives.

Tracking sensors deployed by the Integrated Test Range (ITR), along with instruments on a ship stationed near the designated impact point, confirmed the performance of all subsystems.

Pralay, a solid‑propellant quasi‑ballistic missile, features advanced guidance and navigation systems to deliver high precision. It is designed to carry multiple warhead types against a variety of targets.

The system was developed by the Research Centre Imarat in close collaboration with several DRDO laboratories, including the Defence Research and Development Laboratory, Advanced Systems Laboratory and the Armament Research and Development Establishment.

Industry partners such as Bharat Dynamics Limited and Bharat Electronics Limited, alongside numerous MSMEs, also played a crucial role.

The flight trials were witnessed by senior DRDO scientists, representatives from the Indian Air Force and the Indian Army, as well as industry officials.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded the achievement, stating that the missile, “equipped with modern technologies, will give further technological boost to the Armed Forces against threats.”

Congratulating the teams involved, DRDO Chairman Dr Samir V Kamat remarked, “The successful completion of this phase‑1 flight tests paves the way for induction of the system into the Armed Forces in the near future.”

With these tests, India moves a step closer to strengthening its tactical strike capability with home‑grown technology.
