With the President’s Rule imposed in Manipur and the State Assembly placed under suspended animation, attention has now shifted to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership as it decides on the next course of action in the conflict-ridden northeastern state, reported PTI.

The move came on Thursday evening (13 February), following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, whose tenure was marked by over 21 months of ethnic violence that resulted in more than 250 deaths.

With the BJP failing to reach a consensus on a new Chief Ministerial candidate, the Centre opted for President’s Rule to prevent further political instability.

The Manipur Assembly, which has a tenure until 2027, has been placed under suspended animation, meaning it can be reinstated when the situation stabilises.

Security Strengthened Across Imphal

Following the imposition of the President’s Rule, authorities have heightened security across the state, particularly in the capital city, Imphal.

Officials said the Manipur Police have increased deployment at key locations such as Kangla Gate, Sanjenthong, Moirangkhom, Keisampat, and Konung Mamang to prevent potential unrest.

Additional security personnel have also been deployed around the Raj Bhavan and the Chief Minister’s Secretariat to maintain law and order.

BJP State Unit Responds

Shortly after the announcement of the President’s Rule, Manipur BJP president A Sharda addressed the media, stating that the Assembly had not been dissolved but was placed under suspended animation as per constitutional provisions.

She asserted that once conditions improve, the House could be reinstated.

The decision to impose President’s Rule comes after multiple rounds of discussions between BJP Northeast in-charge Sambit Patra and party legislators, but no consensus was reached on Singh’s successor.

With no immediate resolution in sight, the Centre decided to take direct control of the State’s administration for the time being.
