Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday (1 September) emphasised the need to oppose bullying and Cold War mentality, sending an indirect message to the United States, while advocating multipolarity and strengthening cooperation among Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member states during the 25th meeting of the Council of Heads of State in Tianjin, reported NDTV.
Xi emphasised the need to “promote a correct view of World War II history.” He called for support of the international system with the United Nations at its core and the multilateral trading system under the World Trade Organisation, advocating for inclusive economic globalisation.
Highlighting institutional reform, Xi urged SCO members to enhance the organisation’s capacity, ensure more robust mechanisms, and improve decision-making and operational efficiency.
He stressed expediting the launch of the Integrated Center for Addressing Security Threats and Challenges and the Narcotics Control Center, and establishing the SCO Development Bank to strengthen security and economic cooperation.
Reflecting on the SCO’s 24-year history, Xi praised the organisation’s “Shanghai Spirit” of mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, and respect for diverse civilisations, noting the SCO’s role in driving shared development and cooperation.
The SCO, founded in Shanghai on 15 June, 2001, includes China, Russia, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, and Belarus as member states. Afghanistan and Mongolia hold observer status, while 14 countries—including Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Nepal—participate as dialogue partners.
