Prime Minister Narendra Modi showcased a display of camaraderie with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in China on Monday (1 September).
The two leaders shared a warm hug upon meeting, with Prime Minister Modi, in a post on X, praising the meeting, later traveling together in the same car to the venue, signaling a robust bilateral rapport, reported Hindustan Times.
During their subsequent one-on-one discussions, Modi and Putin explored a wide array of strategic, economic, and energy partnerships, underlining their shared interest in strengthening India-Russia ties. The bilateral meeting also touched upon regional security concerns and collaborative opportunities in technology and defence sectors.
Simultaneously, Modi engaged with Chinese President Xi Jinping, highlighting India’s active role in multilateral diplomacy within the SCO framework.
In parallel, the United States reinforced its growing partnership with India. In a post on X, the US Embassy, citing Secretary of State Marco Rubio, described India-US ties as a “defining relationship of the 21st century,” adding that the collaboration “continues to reach new heights.”
Modi’s interactions with Russia and China, juxtaposed with the US statement, underscore India’s nuanced diplomatic balancing act, seeking strategic autonomy while maintaining deepening partnerships across global powers.
In a joint statement, SCO member states also condemned the military strikes carried out by Israel and the United States against Iran in June 2025, noting that attacks on civilian areas, including nuclear infrastructure, violated international law and UN norms, threatened regional security, and had serious global peace implications.
