Adipurush Makers Alter Dialogues After Audience Objections; Here Are Some Changes

Sources report that Adipurush filmmakers have altered objectionable dialogues in the movie, days after its release. The new version of the film is now being screened in theatres.
Many from the film's core audience had raised objections to certain lines of dialogue based on the Hindu epic Ramayana. Lyricist-writer Manoj Muntashir had penned some lines that were deemed pedestrian and disrespectful to the sanctity of the source material.
According to a report, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which had previously given Adipurush a U certificate, approved the changes on 19 June.
The official CBFC website also lists Adipurush as having been re-certified on 19 June, after being initially cleared on 12 June. The film was released on 16 June.
The original lines that were deemed objectionable have been replaced with new versions.
For instance, "Tu andar kaise ghusa… tu jaanta bhi hai kaun hoon main" has been replaced with "Tum andar kaise ghuse… tum jaante bhi ho kaun hoon main."
Similarly, "Kapda tere baap ka… toh jalegi bhi tere baap ki" has been modified to "Kapda teri Lanka ka… toh jalegi bhi teri Lanka."
The dialogue "Jo hamari behno… unki Lanka laga denge" has been replaced with "Jo hamari behno… unki Lanka mein aag laga denge."
Further, "Mere ek sapole ne tumhare iss sheshnaag ko lamba kar diya… bhara pada hai" has been changed to "Mere ek sapole ne tumhare iss sheshnaag ko samapt kar diya… bhara pada hai."
Critics and audience members noted the jarring quality of the dialogue, causing a backlash on the first day of release.
In an interview with Republic the following day, Muntashir claimed to have grown up listening to colloquial versions of the Ramayana.
The day after that, he told Aaj Tak that Adipurush is 'inspired' by the Ramayana, not an adaptation.
Later that same day, he announced that the objectionable lines would be altered to honour audience sentiment.
In a recent interview with Republic, director Om Raut expressed his focus on audience response rather than reviews for his film Adipurush.
Despite experiencing a significant drop in box office numbers after a successful opening weekend, the studio made the 'brave' decision to change certain lines in the film, according to Muntashir. This decision was made despite the logistical challenges it presented, he said.
The film reportedly had a budget of at least Rs 500 crore and has grossed Rs 395 crore worldwide after five days.
