News Brief
Assam Police in Guwahati
The Assam Police on Saturday (23 March) detained an IIT-Guwahati student and allegedly stopped him from joining the terrorist group Islamic State (ISIS).
This comes days after Haris Farooqi, reportedly the head of ISIS operations in India, was apprehended in Assam's Dhubri district.
According to the police, the student was determined to join ISIS and was travelling for this purpose. However, he was caught in Hajo near Guwahati.
Additional Superintendent of Police (STF) Kalyan Kumar Pathak said that they had received an email and after verifying its authenticity they began the probe.
The e-mail mentioned the student's travel plans to join ISIS. Followed by which, the police contacted IIT Guwahati authorities to know his whereabouts.
The student hails from Delhi's Okhla and is a final-year graduate student. A black flag, similar to that of ISIS, was found in his hostel room.
The police are currently investigating the motives of sending the email and denied disclosing any further details on the matter.
