Former Uttarakhand chief minister and senior Congress leader Harish Rawat has said that he wants to see a Dalit as the chief minister in the state in his life time, reports say. He added that Congress will work towards it. He was addressing a public meeting at Laksar in Haridwar district.

The Congress is undertaking a Parivartan Yatra as part of its campaign in the state for the upcoming Vidhan Sabha polls in the hill state.

Rawat said his party has made history by making a Dalit the chief minister of Punjab, this report says. Rawat is AICC in-charge of Punjab Congress and he has been busy handling the situations that led to the announcement of a new chief minister in Punjab.

“I pray to God and Ganga to bless me with a moment in life when I see the son of a Dalit, poor and artisan as the chief minister in Uttarakhand. We will work for that,” he has been quoted as saying by the Indian Express website.

He said that Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and the Punjab legislature party "unanimously elected a person from a poor family as the chief minister", this report says.

Reports say that Rawat said that when the new chief minister of Punjab was talking about his humble family background at a press conference, it brought tears to those listening.

The Congress is making efforts to regain power in Uttarakhand where now the Aam Aadmi Party under the leadership of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal is working to gain electoral ground. The BJP will be fighting the 2022 assembly election under the leadership of CM Pushkar Singh Dhami.
