In the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is gearing up to fulfill its longstanding commitment to implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

Renowned for championing key ideological issues, such as the construction of the Ram temple and the abrogation of Article 370, the BJP is now directing its attention toward the UCC.

As per reports by Economic Times, Uttarakhand government is poised to roll out the UCC in January, with its draft expected to serve as a blueprint for other states.

Following the Uttarakhand initiative, the party plans to introduce the UCC in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Maharashtra, Assam, Tripura and Manipur.

The party's strategy involves actively engaging with the public to garner support for the UCC, emphasising the principles of legal uniformity and the exclusion of religious considerations.

They anticipate that a positive public response will make it challenging for opponents of the UCC, underscoring the law's acceptance as crucial in determining future steps and potential modifications.

Over the past 18 months, a committee led by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, appointed by the Uttarakhand government, actively sought input from 230,000 individuals on the UCC.

Engaging with 20,000 people from diverse backgrounds, the committee aims to capture a spectrum of perspectives on this significant issue.
