Chennai Airport To Get 11 Rapid Exit Taxiways: Here's All You Need To Know About It

In a significant move to reduce the fuel consumption of aircraft and airside congestion at Chennai airport, Airports Authority of India (AAI) has planned a massive project to build 11 rapid exit taxiways at an estimated cost of Rs 400 crore.
As reported by The Hindu, the new exits will enable quicker runway vacating, cutting down aircraft occupancy time.
The ambitious plan includes eight taxiways connecting the main runway and three linked to the secondary runway.
“It will help an arriving aircraft to quickly exit the runway with lesser fuel consumption and we can handle more aircraft in future....Since this is a functional airport, there will be challenges in carrying out the project,” an official said.

Officials also anticipate a boost in handling capacity from the current 36 movements per hour to 45 movements per hour upon project completion.
The construction, expected to take 2-3 years, aims to manage growing passenger and aircraft traffic efficiently.
The tender process for the project will also commence shortly.
As part of the ongoing modernization efforts, the demolition of the old international terminal is nearing completion, paving the way for the construction of the remaining section of the new integrated terminal to enhance international flight operations.
Earlier, the trial run of Chennai Airport's Terminal 4 was initiated by the Airports Authority of India and began with the introduction of domestic flight services on 14 November.
It is part of a Rs 1,260 crore project aimed at enhancing passenger services.
