News Brief

Dr Sanjay Nishad, president of Nishad Party, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ally in Uttar Pradesh, has reportedly demanded the post of deputy chief minister if the coalition wins the 2022 polls.
He has said that they are in majority and those in majority must get representation. He added that political power is a huge power. "Wo bhagwan se zyada shaktishali hai (it is more powerful than God)", he said.
He added that every problem can be solved by a political party; 'that Dalit brothers have solved their problem through politics, the Yadavs have solved their problems and the same way the Nishad community too can find solutions'.
In an interview to the Times Of India, Nishad talked about how the community has given strength to battles of the past.
He named some prominent political parties and talked about how these political parties have used the strengths of the Nishad community for decades. He has said that if the political partner becomes a voter then the problem will be solved.
He said that the community had no "senapati", so they chose Sanjay Nishad (himself) as their "senapati (chief)." He added that this consolidation of the people of the Nishad community has helped and in 2019, the community came in support of the BJP and Narendra Modi in full.
Nishad's party is gearing up for the 2022 assembly polls. He added that his community now deserves representation at the helm in the state. He added that he will be there in the "sukh dukh" (ups and downs) of Modi and Yogi Adityanath. However, if his demands are not met, the BJP might run the risk of losing the support of the Nishad community, he has reportedly said.
Nishad reportedly met BJP president JP Nadda on 16 June where he demanded 160 seats for his party candidates to fight in the 2022 assembly poll.
"There are 160 Nishad-dominated constituencies in Uttar Pradesh. The community's population in 70 seats is over 75,000. If not chief minister, then going into the elections with me as the deputy chief minister face would benefit the BJP," he has been quoted as saying.
He has reportedly added that Nadda must keep his promise. Nishad wants representation of his party in the Rajya Sabha. Reservation for his community is one his demands. He has told the BJP to not make people of the community unhappy, reports say. He met Adityanath and was reportedly elated after the meeting. He said that things were good and will remain that way.
