As of 26 December, the tally of cases of the COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 in India has reached 109, with forty new cases recorded recently.

As reported by Economic Times, 36 cases were detected from Gujarat, 34 from Karnataka, 14 from Goa, nine from Maharashtra, six from Kerala, four each from Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu, and two from Telangana.

However, despite the rising number of cases, officials emphasise that there is no immediate cause for concern, as 92 per cent of those infected are opting for home-based treatment, and there is no significant increase in hospitalisation rates.

Union Health Secretary Sudhansh Pant has called on states and union territories to implement necessary public health measures and reinforce COVID-19 control and management strategies, especially during the festive season.

States are urged to monitor and report cases of Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) district-wise for early detection of trends.

Also noteworthy is the fact that, India reported a single-day rise of 529 COVID-19 cases, with the number of active cases at 4,093.
