In a first, Saveera Parkash, a Hindu woman, has officially submitted her nomination papers for a general seat in the upcoming Pakistan polls set for 8 February 2024.

This follows the recent amendments by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), mandating the participation of five per cent female candidates for general seats.

Who is Saveera Parkash?

Currently serving as the general secretary of the PPP (Pakistan People's Party) women's wing in Buner, Saveera Parkash is continuing her family's legacy of community service, inspired by her father, Oam Parkash, a retired physician with a 35-year PPP membership.

According to LiveMint, Parkash shared her aspirations to uphold her father's legacy by focusing on uplifting the underprivileged in the region.

With a background in medicine, Parkash emphasises her commitment to "serving humanity," drawing from her experiences in government hospitals.

Her candidacy aims to address issues of poor management and helplessness in these institutions.

Additionally, she highlights her dedication to women's empowerment, safety, and rights, acknowledging the historical neglect faced by women in the development sector.

Meanwhile, social media influencer Imran Noshad Khan extended a wholehearted endorsement to Saveera Parkash, applauding her for challenging entrenched patriarchal norms.

He underscores the significance of a woman stepping forward to contest elections, marking a historic moment 55 years after Buner merged with Pakistan.
