Delhi Police Seeks Details Of Victims Of Sexual Harassment Rahul Gandhi Met During Bharat Jodo Yatra

The Delhi Police has issued a notice to Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi, seeking information about the victims of sexual harassment, who approached him during the Bharat Jodo Yatra. 

In January, he made a speech in Kashmir claiming that he met women who had been victims of sexual harassment, some of whom were crying.

During a media interaction in Kashmir, Gandhi had said:

“When I was walking, there were a lot of women who were crying… Few of them got emotional after seeing me. But there were women who told me they have been raped, they have been molested. Few said they were molested by their relatives/known persons. When I asked them if  I should call the police, they told me no and said they wanted me to know. They didn’t want to inform the police because they said they would face more issues. So, yahi humare desh ki sacchai hai.”

The police have stated that they are ready to take legal action against the offenders and also provide security to the victims and have, therefore, sought the details. 

They have sent Gandhi a list of questionnaire to give details of the women who approached him. 

At the Cambridge University lecture, Gandhi had made another startling claim about the Kashmir leg of his Yatra. He said that he had an encounter with terrorists in Kashmir.

He said that they made eye contact with him but did not do anything because he had come there to listen. 

"In that environment, militants should kill me. He says they are there and they are looking at you. So, I look at them and they are giving me this sort of look and I am like, okay, I am now in trouble because this guy has just told me this ... They give me this look and I give them this look back and then we carry on. Nothing happens. Why I am telling you this is because they actually could not do anything. They actually did not have the power to do anything even if they wanted to. Because I had come into that environment listening. And I had come into that environment completely with no violence in me at all. And a vast number of people there were saying that. That to me was an indicator of power of listening and non-violence," he added.

The Congress, in a tweet, said that they would reply to the notice in due course in accordance with law.

It added, "This notice is yet another proof of a govt in panic and their latest salvo to weaken democracy, women empowerment, freedom of expression and role of the opposition."
