Collection Of Data On Illegal Migrants 'Impractical': Centre Informs Supreme Court During CAA Hearing

In response to the Supreme Court's scrutiny of section 6A of the Citizenship Act concerning illegal immigrants in Assam, the Centre has stated that collecting precise data on illegal migrants is impractical due to their secretive and clandestine entry.
The affidavit also revealed that 17,861 individuals have been granted citizenship under the provision, while 32,381 have been identified as foreigners by the foreigners tribunal from 1966-1971, reported Moneycontrol.
Addressing the court's query on estimating the inflow of illegal immigrants, the Centre highlighted the complex and ongoing process of detecting, detaining, and deporting these individuals.
The affidavit also provided insights into the working of the Assam Police, border fencing, patrols, and other mechanisms aimed at discouraging infiltration.
Earlier, the Supreme Court, on 7 December, had directed the Centre to furnish data on Bangladeshi immigrants granted Indian citizenship in Assam between 1 January 1966, and 25 March 1971.
Section 6A, inserted into the Citizenship Act as a special provision under the Assam Accord, sets criteria for individuals arriving in Assam between 1 January 1966, and 25 March 1971, to register for Indian citizenship.
