Experts Recommend Creation Of Wheat Board To Address Critical Issues In Wheat Industry
The experts highlighted the need of establishing a board dedicated to addressing matters concerning wheat and its products, similar to the boards for tea, coffee, and spices.
In Guwahati, a two-day international milling and baking technical conference was recently concluded. Organized by the Wheat Products Promotion Society (WPPS), a non-profit organization with 33 years of experience, the event saw the participation of cereal experts from India, Australia, and Canada.
One of the key recommendations made by these experts in the conclave is the establishment of a Wheat Board of India. This board would consist of representatives from all levels of the supply chain and would focus on promoting healthy growth in the production, storage, processing, and utilization of wheat in the country.
In addition to the Wheat Board, the experts also emphasized the need for an integrated multi-disciplinary organization. This organization would be responsible for addressing end-to-end compliance at both the Central and State government levels.
The goal is to ensure food and nutritional security through wheat for the growing population.
These recommendations highlight the importance of collaboration and comprehensive planning in the wheat industry. By bringing together stakeholders from various stages of the supply chain and establishing effective compliance measures, the experts aim to support the sustainable growth of wheat production in India.
"Addressing critical issues and exploring the future of wheat-based industries is crucial due to the significant increase in wheat requirements," emphasized Ajay Goyal, the chairman of WPPS.

The panelists also emphasized the need for biofortified wheat varieties to meet the nutritional needs of the population. They proposed the implementation of a nationwide program to modernize wheat storage and handling, aiming to reduce post-harvest losses.
Additionally, they recommended incentivizing the adoption of sustainable processing technologies.
One of the key recommendations put forth was also to prioritize the development of climate-resilient wheat varieties with higher productivity traits by agricultural and food research organizations.
Food research institutes have been advised to prioritize the development of milling technologies in order to increase the recovery of different milling streams for human consumption.
