First Tejas LCA Mk1A Likely To Be Delivered Next Month, Mk2 Production To Start By 2027: Report

The latest version of the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) is reportedly poised for delivery as early as next month, with preparations underway for an even more capable version slated for production by 2027.
The LCA Mk1A, cleared for procurement by the Centre in 2021, aims to bolster the Air Force's fighter jets fleet with enhanced capabilities, including new-age radars, electronic warfare systems, and mid-air refueling features.
The first of the 83 LCA Mk1A jets are expected to be ready for delivery by next month, Economic Times reported citing senior defence officials.
By August, at least four LCA Mk1A are likely to be delivered.
In addition to the existing order for 83 aircraft, the government is also contemplating the acquisition of an additional 97 jets.
Presently, the country's production capacity stands at eight fighter jets annually, with plans underway to double this to 16 per year.
Meanwhile, expected to be ready for serial production by 2027, the Mk2 variant is likely to offer extended flight durations and increased weapons payload capacity.
Efforts are already underway to advance the Mk2 prototype, with necessary infrastructure such as jigs and fixtures in place to facilitate production.
The project is poised to follow the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) model, involving collaboration between DRDO, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, and a private sector entity.
