Former CM Raman Singh Assumes Speaker's Role With Unanimous Mandate In Chhattisgarh Assembly

On Tuesday (19 December), senior BJP MLA and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh secured a unanimous election as the speaker of the state legislative assembly during the inaugural session of the newly-elected assembly.
Chief Minister Vinshu Deo Sai proposed Singh's candidacy, seconded by Deputy CM Arun Sao according to a report from Hindustan Times.
Concurrently, leader of the opposition Charandas Mahant also endorsed Singh's nomination, with support from senior Congress leader and former CM Bhupesh Baghel.
Three additional proposals in favor of Raman Singh were put forth by BJP members.
Having filed his nomination for the speaker's post on Sunday, Singh expressed his commitment to uniting everyone in the Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabha in his new role.
A seven-term MLA, Singh has consecutively won the Rajnandgaon seat in the elections of 2008, 2013, 2018, and 2023.
He also served as Chief Minister of Chhatisgarh from 2003-2018 and till now holds the distinction of being the longest-serving chief minister of the state.
