The University Grants Commission (UGC) of India has embarked on a project to provide undergraduate textbooks in 12 Indian languages across various disciplines including Arts, Science, Commerce, and Social Sciences.

This initiative, closely aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aims to enhance learning opportunities in Indian languages at university levels.

“We are identifying nodal universities in different states who will coordinate the exercise of forming teams of authors who can write high quality textbooks in Indian languages,” UGC chairman Professor M Jagadesh Kumar was quoted as saying by The New Indian Express.

As part of this effort, the UGC issued a notice inviting authors, critics, and faculty members from Higher Educational Institutes (HEIs) to register with UGC so that they can participate in writing original textbooks in 12 Indian languages.

These textbooks will cater to undergraduate courses in a wide array of subjects, including Arts, Science, and Social Sciences.

"University Grants Commission (UGC), Ministry of Education, Government of India invites Expression of Interest (Eol) from interested Authors/Critics & Faculty Members of HEls for writing original text-books in 12 Indian languages for the undergraduate (UG) level courses in the different subjects of Arts, Science and Social Sciences," the UGC general secretary Manish Joshi said in a notice issued on Thursday (11 January).

“Interested authors/critics/faculty members of HEls may send their acceptance to the Commission and furnish their Expression of Interest (EOI) through the form available at the following link latest by 30 January, 2024 (midnight),” the notice added.

The 12 Indian languages for which EoI has been invited are Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.
