US technology giant Google has reportedly told suppliers to begin the production of its Pixel smartphone in India by the next quarter at the earliest.

This move is part of Google's plan to ship over 10 million Pixel phones this year, Nikkei Asia reported.

Earlier last year, the company had shipped around 10 million units for the first time amid a global economic slowdown.

Google will first prepare the production line for its flagship Pixel 8 Pro in South India in the coming weeks, then begin turning out phones in the April-June quarter, Nikkei Asia reported citing sources familiar with the plan.

Later, the company will begin the production of the Pixel 8 in North India around the middle of this year.

The move will also help Google diversify its supply chain away from China.

Earlier last year, the company had announced that its first made-in-India Pixel phones will be available this year, joining Apple and Samsung in tapping the massive and growing Indian market at a time when the overall smartphone industry is slowing.

In 2023, the Indian smartphone market experienced a growth of 1 per cent, reaching 146 million units, according to data from research agency IDC.

This growth accelerated in the second half of the year, with an 11 per cent increase compared to the same period in the previous year.

In contrast, the global smartphone market saw a decline of 4.7 per cent in the same year.

China, which holds the title of the largest smartphone market globally, witnessed a 5 per cent decrease in sales, as reported by IDC.
