How 23 Major Countries Of The World View India — Pew Survey Has The Answer

With the upcoming G20 Summit set to take place in New Delhi next week, India has become the focal point of international attention.

A survey conducted by a think tank based in Washington has revealed that the general perception of India is positive across 23 countries.

According to the recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, a median of 46 per cent of adults hold a favourable opinion of India, while a median of 34 per cent have a negative opinion.

Similarly, opinions on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gathered from a subset of 12 countries, are mixed, with an average of 37 per cent expressing faith in him.

The Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan fact tank that aims to inform the public about the various issues, attitudes, and trends that shape the world.

The recent survey was conducted from 20 February to 22 May 2023, involving 30,861 people in 24 countries.

The survey aimed to explore Indians' perceptions of other nations, as well as their perceptions of India and its political leaders, both within and outside of India.

The survey findings indicate that a majority of Indians believe that India is becoming more powerful. Approximately seven out of 10 Indians hold this view, which is significantly higher than the median of 28 per cent across 19 other nations in 2022.

Interestingly, only 19 per cent of Indians share the opinion that India's power has not increased.

In comparison, respondents from the 19 countries were more likely to believe that India's influence has remained relatively unchanged in recent years, with a median of 48 per cent holding this belief.

Additionally, Indians are as likely as people from other nations to think that India's influence has weakened in recent times, with 13 per cent of Indians and a median of 13 per cent across the 19 countries expressing this view.

A majority of Indians (79 per cent) hold a favorable opinion of PM Modi, with 55 per cent of them having a very favourable opinion.

However, in 12 nations, the majority being middle-income countries, only a median of 37 per cent have faith in PM Modi's decision-making in foreign policy.

Kenyans, on the other hand, are particularly confident, with 60 per cent believing PM Modi would make the right decisions in international affairs.

Indians also stand out for their positive views of Russia.

While only a median of 14 per cent of people in 22 nations have a favorable opinion of Russia, a majority of Indians (57 per cent) view Russia favorably.

Among all the surveyed public, Indians are the most likely to believe that Russian President Vladimir Putin will make the right decisions regarding international affairs.

Similarly, India (65 per cent) holds a higher opinion of the United States compared to many other nations surveyed by the Pew Research Center.
