Karnataka Govt To Soon Open Registration Portal For Marriage Assistance To Poor Brahmin Women

The Karnataka State Brahmin Development Board (KSBDB) is going to invite applications through online portal and other modes for its Maitreyi and Arundhathi schemes.

While under the Arundhati scheme the board plans to give Rs 25,000 each to 550 poor women from the Brahmin community for their marriage, under the Maitreyi scheme a financial bond of Rs three lakh (over three years) will be created for about 25 women who marry Brahmin priests from poor backgrounds.

“We will call for applications from 2 March. The board has just initiated systems through which tehsildars will visit the homes of applicants to verify their eligibility and economic credentials,” HS Sachindananda Murthy, the chairman of the board, said.

Aditya Bhat, the 26 year old who has been practising priesthood for the last 10 years and a resident of Adangadur village in Chikmagalur district, is likely to be the first beneficiary of the Maitreyi scheme, reports Hindustan Times.

“I had heard about the scheme and applied for it. The board took my wedding invite and asked me to apply for the grant after my marriage,” he said.

The Board is taking several other measures for the well-being of people belonging to the Brahmin community. 4,000 participants aged between 8-80 years will be given Rs 500 as they will be trained in sandhya vandana and pooja rituals. Furthermore, Rs 14 crore will be spent to provide scholarships to 5,800 students from the social group.
