In a crucial meeting to strategise seat-sharing for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP) have jointly decided to prioritise their performance in the 2022 assembly elections as a key factor in finalising their agreement, reported Indian Express.

The parties underscored the significance of specific seats' stronghold and potential candidates in shaping their collaboration.

Highlighting flexibility, an SP leader expressed a willingness to accommodate "winnable" candidates during the discussions.

As per the report, the parties also reached a consensus to submit a list of potential winning seats along with the names of probable candidates.

The evaluation process will factor in social and demographic conditions of constituencies, with preferences for candidates aligned with the population's composition.

While the Congress draws attention to its remarkable performance in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, securing 21 seats, the SP aims to leverage its substantial success in the 2022 assembly polls, where it secured 111 seats with a notable 32 per cent vote share.

The seat-sharing negotiations will also focus on the performance in specific Lok Sabha constituencies based on assembly segments within each seat.

As discussions progress, both parties aim to align their strengths strategically to maximise their impact in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.
