News Brief
Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu With PM Modi
Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has adopted a reconciliatory stance towards India, emphasizing its status as the Maldives' "closest ally" and urging New Delhi to consider debt relief for the archipelago nation, which owes approximately USD 400.9 million to India.
After initially demanding the repatriation of Indian military personnel operating aviation platforms in the Maldives, Muizzu has softened his approach, acknowledging India's significant aid and project implementation in the country.
In his first interview since assuming office, Muizzu highlighted India's pivotal role in aiding the Maldives and expressed confidence in maintaining strong bilateral relations.
"India will continue to remain the Maldives’ closest ally, there is no question about it," he told local Dhivehi language publication 'Mihaaru' in an interview.
Despite the earlier demand for the complete exit of Indian personnel, Muizzu now seeks debt relief from India to address the burden of hefty loans inherited from previous governments.
“The conditions we have inherited are such that there are very large loans taken from India. Hence, we are holding discussions to explore leniencies in the repayment structure of these loans," Muizzu said.
“Instead of halting any ongoing projects … to proceed with them at speed, so I see no reason for any adverse effects (on Maldives-India relations),” Muizzu added.
Muizzu's conciliatory tone aligns with the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Maldives, as he underscored the importance of resolving the debt issue with India.
Muizzu also expressed hope that India would “facilitate debt relief measures in the repayment of these loans,” and said that he has conveyed his appreciation to the Indian government for their contributions.
