Mumbai: Controversy Erupts In A Housing Society As Family Brings Goats To Their Flat Ahead Of Bakrid

A family bringing two goats home ahead of Bakrid, which will be celebrated on Thursday, has caused a controversy in a housing society in Mumbai's Mira Road.
The police have detained a few people, including those who turned violent during the protest that occurred on Tuesday night.
Hordes of residents from the JP Infra Society gathered in their society complex after discovering that one family had brought two goats at around 3 am on Tuesday, reports Times of India.
Closed circuit television footage revealed the family using the lift to bring the goats to their flat.
According to preliminary reports, the housing complex is home to around 200 families from the minority community.
They were allocated a dedicated area for sacrificing goats during the Bakri Eid festival.
However, this year, the society decided in a meeting not to allow sacrifice in the designated area. The families from the minority community were duly informed.
Earlier in 2019, the Bombay High Court had banned the slaughter of sheep and goats inside flats and houses during Bakri Eid, citing "public safety, hygiene and sanitation".
The HC bench had restrained the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) from giving permissions for slaughter insides flats and houses.
However, the HC allowed the BMC to give permission for slaughtering in housing society with a condition that approval should not be granted if the society falls within one kilometre walking distance from a community space for slaughtering, including a religious slaughtering place.
The police were reportedly informed by the family who brought the goats that they had no intention of sacrificing the animals in their home.
They said that the animals would be taken to the licensed slaughterhouse for the purpose of carrying out the sacrifice.
The police reportedly said that there is no rule within the society that prohibits individuals from keeping domesticated animals.
The police have deployed a significant number of personnel in and around the housing society.
