Strengthening the rail connectivity to North East, a new express train will be launched between Gomtinagar in Uttar Pradesh and Kamakhya in Assam from today (6 January).
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is slated to flag off the weekly express service from Gomtinagar in Lucknow in the presence of senior railway and state government officials.
Gomtinagar station is the newly-developed terminal with modern amenities for passengers in Uttar Pradesh.
The 18-coach express train would take about 30 hours to reach Kamakhya from Gomtinagar with stoppages at Gorakhpur, Barauni, Katihar, New Jalpaiguri. The train would comprise AC and non-AC coaches.
There was a demand from trade and industry for a direct service to Kamakhya. The weekly service would also cater to the growing demand from pilgrims to the famous Kamakhya Temple.
Uttar Pradesh, expected to face a crucial assembly election this year, would also have another rail service.
Besides the train to Kamakhya, the Railway Minister would launch the extension of existing tri-weekly Mumbai-Lucknow Express service upto Sitapur in Uttar Pradesh.
Extension of the train service to Sitapur would benefit passengers from Mumbai.
