News Brief
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission, accusing Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra of violating the Model Code of Conduct during a public rally in Dausa, Rajasthan on 20 October, 2023.
In their complaint, the BJP contends that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra made statements suggesting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited the Devnarain temple and offered an envelope containing just Rs 21, a claim she herself noted as unverified, as per reports by Indian Express.
The BJP asserts that this constitutes a violation of the fundamental principles of free and fair elections, as it invokes the Prime Minister's personal religious beliefs.
The complaint goes further, alleging that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's statements not only breach the Model Code of Conduct but also contravene provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Representation of People Act, 1951.
The BJP deems these unverified and false statements as serious in nature and unsuitable for condonation.
