Right Time For Ayurveda And Traditional Medicines To Become More Popular Globally, says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asserted that the world realised the importance of Ayurveda and traditional medicines during Covid-19 and the current situation presents the right time for Ayurveda and traditional medicines to become even more popular globally.

Addressing the inaugural session of the 4th Global Ayurveda Festival – Virtual Conference and Expo, organised by FICCI, Modi said, "There is growing interest in them and the world is seeing how the modern and traditional medicines both are important to further wellness. People are realising the benefits of Ayurveda and its role in boosting immunity. From this forum, I would like to appreciate the efforts of all those who are working on Ayurveda across the world. This passion and persistence will benefit entire humanity."

Highlighting the opportunities, Prime Minister Modi said that with the increasing popularity of Ayurveda, a strong opportunity awaits us, and we must not lose it.

"Youngsters are using a wide range of Ayurveda products and there is growing consciousness to integrate Ayurveda with evidence-based medical science. Other things getting popular are Ayurveda supplements and personal care products," he said.

Emphasizing the potential of Ayurveda in the tourism sector, the Prime Minister further said that the impact of Ayurveda and traditional medicines is immense.

"Today, there are many flavours of tourism, but India especially offers wellness tourism. The strongest pillar in wellness tourism is Ayurveda and traditional medicines," he added.

Assuring full government support to the sector, Modi said, “India has set up the national AYUSH mission to support AYUSH medical systems through cost-effective services. It is also working to strengthen the educational system along with enforcement of quality control of Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and Homeopathy drugs and ensuring sustainable availability of raw materials.”

The Prime Minister stated that the government was undertaking various quality control measures as well.

"Our policy regarding Ayurveda and other Indian systems of medicines is already aligned with the WHO’s Traditional Medicine Strategy 2014-2023. The WHO has also announced setting-up of a global centre for traditional medicine in India and we welcome this step. This is the ideal time to think about worldwide wellness. Let us keep building on our achievements in Ayurveda and let Ayurveda be the driving force which brings the world to our land and creates prosperity for our youth," he noted.

Appreciating the role of youth in promoting Ayurveda, he said that the youth have taken a lead to present our traditional forms of healing in a language that is globally understood.

“I strongly feel that the ethos of our land and entrepreneurial spirit of our youth can do wonders,” he emphasised.

Union Ministers of State Kiren Rijiju and V Muraleedharan also spoke on the occasion.
