News Brief
One Nation One Election
The high-level committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, tasked with examining the viability of conducting simultaneous elections across the nation, is nearing completion of its report.
According to reports, the panel is aiming to submit the report to the Union government before the announcement of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
“The report is likely to be submitted anytime in February or March,” one of the members of the panel was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
Also, the committee has engaged in a consultation process this week, meeting with two former Chief Justices and a former Chief Election Commissioner.
“As part of this consultation process, suggestions and considered views are solicited from the citizens, political parties, eminent jurists like former Chief Justices of Supreme Court and High Courts, constitutional experts, former CECs among others… The consultation process shall continue in the coming days,” the Law Ministry said in a statement, as reported by Indian Express.
The committee, formed by the Law Ministry in September 2023, is tasked with recommending strategies for the implementation of simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies.
The committee had recently invited public input for a 10-day period and sought opinions from former CECs.
The ongoing consultation process is designed to include citizens, political parties, eminent jurists, and constitutional experts.
