In a significant milestone for the Indian judiciary, the Supreme Court announced today (22 December) that it has disposed of more cases than the number of litigations registered in 2023.

The top court reported the disposal of 52,191 cases from 1 January 2023, to 15 December 2023, encompassing 45,642 miscellaneous matters and approximately 6,549 regular matters.

This figure exceeds the total registration of cases for the year, which was 49,191.

As per reports by NDTV, the court attributed this accomplishment to its proactive approach, the adoption of technology, and strategic reforms aimed at expediting the justice delivery system.

The court highlighted a paradigm shift, reducing the timeframe for listing cases from 10 days to as few as 5 to 7 days after verification.

The achievement is especially commendable as it surpasses previous years' disposal figures, with 39,800 cases in 2022, 24,586 in 2021, and 20,670 in 2020.

The Supreme Court also credited the Integrated Case Management Information System, implemented in 2017, for facilitating this record-breaking disposal.
