In a bid to further tighten the noose on the pesky callers, the department of telecom (DoT) has proposed to impose a penalty of Rs 10,000 on the telemarketers for every call and SMS made after 50 violations.

The DoT has reportedly proposed to make rules more stringent by proposing to reduce the violation slabs for imposing penalty on the telemarketers.

At present, the slabs under the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations (TCCCPR) are 0-100, 100-1,000, and over 1,000 violations.

However, the DoT has proposed reducing the slabs for levying penalty to Rs 1,000 per violation for 0-10 breaches, Rs 5,000 each for 10-50 violations and Rs 10,000 each for more than 50 violations, reports Hindustan Times.

Futher, the Digital Intelligence Unit (DIU) of the DoT will also check the breaches at device-level as well. It will send a system-generated message to the suspected numbers for verification and in case they are not re-verified, all those numbers will be disconnected and associated IMEIs will be put under suspected list.

"No calls, SMS or data will be allowed for the IMEIs in suspected list for a period of 30 days," a source was quoted by HT as saying.

Besides, any communication by pesky callers from a new connection using the device with IMEI number recorded in the grey list will be asked for re-verification and if they change the device again, the IMEI number of the new device will also be put on suspected list until re-verification is completed.
