Tesla is expected to follow through with its plans to set up a manufacturing base in India despite the company's CEO Elon Musk postponing his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi this week.

Musk had said that he looked forward to visiting India later in the year.

The meeting was postponed due to Musk's stated heavy obligations within Tesla, which necessitated rescheduling the visit.

“Unfortunately, very heavy Tesla obligations require that the visit to India be delayed, but I do very much look forward to visiting later this year,” Musk said in a post on X on 20 April.

The timing of Musk's postponed visit also coincided with ongoing Indian elections, a period during which Delhi's focus is primarily on campaigning, leading to a lack of announcements regarding economic policies.

Prior to the postponement, there were expectations for Musk to unveil Tesla's plans for a manufacturing plant in India, following India's recent announcement of lower import taxes on specific electric vehicles, contingent upon substantial investment commitments from companies.

While Musk's decision surprised some analysts, industry experts generally agree that Tesla remains committed to establishing a manufacturing base in India, given the country's status as the world's third-largest automobile market as of 2022.

Analysts speculate that Tesla's entry into the Indian market may involve partnerships with local entities to navigate operational challenges and potential policy adjustments, SCMP reported.

This approach aligns with Tesla's broader strategy of scaling up globally and tapping into emerging markets.

On Tuesday (23 April), Tesla said it plans to accelerate the launch of less expensive cars and start producing new models as soon as this year, ahead of its previous launch timeline in late 2025.

The Indian government's efforts to incentivise electric vehicle manufacturing have been seen as a positive step, prompting discussions about Tesla's future strategies, including potential model launches and market positioning within India's automotive landscape.

As India's electric vehicle market evolves, spurred by Tesla's entry, analysts anticipate increased competition and potential responses from local manufacturers, buoyed by government incentives and market dynamics.
