The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday (18 April) accused jailed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of intentionally consuming foods that could elevate his blood sugar levels to facilitate a medical bail plea.

The ED counsel told a Delhi court that jailed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was deliberately eating mangoes and sweets and taking tea with sugar so as to raise his blood sugar level and use that as a ground to secure bail on medical grounds.

The submissions were made by ED counsel Zoheb Hossain before Special Judge Kaveri Baweja in response to Kejriwal's request for regular sugar level check-ups and consultations with his doctor via video conference.

"Today, he (Kejriwal) is in court custody. He is in custody because of our case. The cause of concern is he was allowed prescribed home cooked food because he claimed he has high diabetes. But he is having mangoes, sweets and sugar with with tea. This is a basis to create a ground for bail," Hossain submitted, Bar and Bench reported.

According to Hossain, the details came to be known after the agency wrote to Tihar jail and sought information about Kejriwal's diet and the medicines being taken by him.

Advocate Vivek Jain, representing Kejriwal, objected to the ED's accusations as being aimed at media attention.

Jain also said that he is withdrawing the present application and that he will file a better one.

Kejriwal, who was arrested by the ED on 21 March in Delhi Liquor policy case, is currently lodged in Tihar jail in connection with the money laundering probe related to Delhi excise policy case.

His lawyers had informed the Rouse Avenue Court that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor's sugar levels had dropped to 46 and was continuously fluctuating.

The Court today sought a report from Tihar Jail about the diet chart of Kejriwal.
