Supporters of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and MPs from its alliance partners like the Congress and communist parties have justified the arrest of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state secretary SG Suryah.

According to a report by The Commune, Madurai MP Su Venkatesan of the CPI (M) and Virudhunagar MP Manickam Tagore of the Congress have chosen to ignore the incident and instead focus on Suryah's mistake of saying that the death occurred in Madurai district instead of Cuddalore district.

Responding to a tweet by Venkatesan that there was no Pennadam municipality in Madurai district, political commentator Savukku Shankar said that a real communist would focus on getting justice for the worker.

Suryah was arrested late on Friday night (16 June), for questioning the silence of Venkatesan, over the death of Babu, a sanitation worker in Pennadam municipality.

According to another report by the same publication, Suryah has been sent to judicial custody till 1 July. He has been charged under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 505(1)(b), 505(1)(c) (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 66(D) (punishment for cheating by personation by using computer resource) of the Information Technology (IT) Act.

The councillor has been charged under section 174 which provides for a simple imprisonment upto six months or a fine or both on the basis of a complaint filed by the wife of the deceased worker, says the report.
