Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president K Annamalai today (17 June) came down heavily on heavily on the communist parties in the state, calling them responsible for the death of the sanitation worker Babu, who died after he entered a drain in Pennadam municipality, after being asked to do so by Viswanathan, a councillor from a communist party.
BJP state secretary SG Suryah was arrested late on Friday (16 June) for erroneously mentioning that the Pennadam municipality was located in the Madurai district instead of the Cuddalore district while questioning the silence of CPIM MP Su Venkatesan over the incident involving a fellow member of his party.
He said, "From 2018 to 2022, 52 sanitation workers have died on duty in Tamil Nadu alone. Tamil Nadu has the highest death toll in India.
"In Pennadam municipality, a municipal council member belonging to the Communist Party forced a sanitation worker to work in fecal-stained waste water, causing him to die due to illness.
"No case was filed against the borough councilor who committed the crime. But for questioning this, our state secretary Mr @SuryahSG has arrested him.
"The Communist Party in Tamil Nadu is not qualified to even utter the word 'communism'. As far as Tamil Nadu is concerned, the Communists are functioning as a branch office of the DMK. These outdated communists have been deceiving the toiling workers for a long time by talking about social justice. The Communist Party of Tamil Nadu is responsible for the death of Pannadam sanitation worker."
