Chief Minister MK Stalin criticised Governor Ravi after a student committed suicide due to failure in NEET
Governor RN Ravi had recently said that if it were up to him, he would not give assent to the Bill which seeks to exempt the state from NEET. He had sent it to the President in May 2022.
Days after Jagadeeswaran, a 19-year old student from Chromepet committed suicide as he was unable to clear the NEET exam to study MBBS, his father Selva Sekar also committed suicide.
Jagadeeswaran, who wanted to become a doctor, had scored 85 per cent in Class 12 and joined NEET coaching but couldn't clear the exam.
Jegadeeswaran's suicide comes days after Governor RN Ravi said at a programme to felicitate students from the state who had scored high marks in NEET that if it were up to him, he would not give assent to the Bill to exempt the state from the exam.
The Bill has been sent to the President as it is on a subject in the Concurrent list, he added.
Further, he said that a fear psychosis had been created among students as the exam had caused a loss to the private medical college admissions industry, which was a Rs 1000 crore business.
He added that the argument that NEET compulsorily needed coaching is a myth and that selection from amongst government school students had gone up to over 600 a year as a result of the 7.5 per cent horizontal reservation started by the AIADMK government.
Encouraging students to do well, he said that he wanted Tamil Nadu's students to compete, be the best and not be 'intellectually disabled.' He advised those who cleared the exam to speak to students in their schools and inspire them.
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has targeted the centre and Governor Ravi after the deaths.
In a statement, Chief Minister Stalin criticised Governor Ravi saying that he was stone-hearted and was acting in favour of coaching institutions. He said that the exam could be cleared only by those who had money and could afford to study at expensive coaching institutions for a few years.
Further, he said that Governor Ravi should not speak as if he had authority on the matter as the Bill is now before the President.
He added that once the political climate changes in 2024, NEET will come crashing down and people like Governor Ravi who say that they won't sign the Bill would disappear.
He concluded his statement by stating that he was telling students that they should not lose their life in any situation and that his government is working towards removing NEET.
