Four students from Tamil Nadu, including one of the all-India toppers are amongst the top 10 in the NEET 2023 exam, the results of which were declared today (13 June).
Prabanjan J from Tamil Nadu and Bora Varun Chakravarthi from Andhra Pradesh topped the examination. The three others in the top 10, who are from Tamil Nadu are Kaustav Bauri, Surya Siddharth N and Varun S.
Congratulating the students on their performance, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president K Annamalai said, “This astounding result from TN is a lesson to parties like the DMK who chose to politicise the NEET examination, which ensured a level playing field for all students aspiring to become Doctors!”
The NEET exam has been opposed by the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) as well as the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) on grounds of it being discriminatory against students from disadvantaged backgrounds and those who have studied in state boards.
Earlier, this year, the DMK government decided to name a newly constructed auditorium at the Ariyalur Medical College after medical aspirant S Anitha, who committed suicide in 2017 due to low scores in NEET.
Before the introduction of NEET, medical admissions in the state were based on plus-two marks.
Her death had intensified opposition to NEET in the state
A bill brought by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government to exempt the state from NEET, is pending with the President.
In February 2023, the Tamil Nadu government filed a plea in the Supreme Court asking it to declare that NEET was a violation of the basic structure of the constitution, against the principles of federalism and also against the fundamental right to equality.
