Uttarakhand: Dhami Government To Bring Uniform Civil Code Bill In Upcoming Assembly Session After Committee Submits Report

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday (29 January) reiterated his commitment to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state.
He said that bringing UCC was a poll promise in the 2022 assembly elections and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was blessed by the opportunity to form the government in Uttarakhand.
"We formed a committee to make a draft under the chairmanship of Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai and now the committee has completed its work. We will get the draft on 2 February," he said.
The former Supreme Court judge-led committee was announced after the first Cabinet meeting of the Uttarakhand government formed in 2022.
After receiving the draft, the Dhami government will analyse it and discussion will take place among cabinet members. Then the government will move forward Vidhan Sabha proceedings for the Bill.
Indian Express reported that the Uttarakhand government has convened a four-day Assembly session from 5 to 8 February. The UCC will be brought in the upcoming assembly session, Dhami said.
As reported earlier, after the UCC Bill is passed in the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly, it is expected that two other BJP-led states, Gujarat and Assam, will introduce and pass similar legislation in their respective assemblies.
If everything goes as per plan, three states will have enacted the UCC before the Lok Sabha elections in the next few months.
