In a shocking incident, the vehicle of Bhartiya Janata Party’s candidate Suvendu Adhikari, who had defeated West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram, was attacked outside the counting centre in Haldia.

TMC workers are reportedly accused of the attack.

As per the India Today report, angry TMC supporters pelted stone on Suvendu Adhikari’s convoy in Haldia following the declaration of the result.

They were also seen heckling and shouting slogans against the BJP and Suvendu Adhikari at the counting centre.

Notably, Adhikari had pulled off a big upset in Nandigram as he defeated incumbent Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by 1,957 votes.

He slammed TMC workers for creating an atmosphere of vengeance and violence in West Bengal.

“This evening in Haldia goons from the @AITCofficial targeted my car and attempted to attack my vehicle. If public representatives face such attacks, imagine the fate & plight of the Common Man,” he added.

Yesterday, a BJP office in West Bengal's Arambagh region had been set ablaze as violence broke out even as counting was on for Assembly elections in the state.

TV9 journalist Anindya Banerjee who posted a clip of the arson said that TMC had denied charges of its involvement.

Earlier, as per reports, the BJP's office in Kolkata in Hastings was gheraoed soon after trends emerged in TMC's favour.

Fears have been raised over possible retribution against ordinary BJP workers following the culmination of the assembly election results. Bengal which has had a long history of political violence has seen the deaths of as many as 300 BJP workers in the past few years.
