In a tragic incident in Lewiston, Maine, on Wednesday night (25 October), at least 22 people lost their lives, and over 50 others were injured in a series of shootings.

The shootings occurred at two locations, a bowling alley and a restaurant, in Lewiston, Maine, the state's second-largest city, as reported by Indian Express.

Initial reports suggested a shooting at a Walmart distribution centre, but Walmart later clarified that it was a false alarm.

Around 6.56 pm local time, police, fire, and rescue personnel rushed to the scenes. The exact casualty count is pending official confirmation, but Lewiston City Councilor Robert McCarthy received information via text message that 22 individuals have tragically lost their lives.

The gunman targeted two public places, Sparetime Recreation on Mollison Way and Schemengees Bar and Grille Restaurant on Lincoln Street.

Nearby, Legends Sports Bar and Grill promptly secured the safety of its customers and employees. The police arrived swiftly to ensure a safe evacuation.

The suspect, Robert Card, is still at large. He has been identified through photos released by law enforcement, depicting him wearing a long-sleeved shirt and jeans, with a beard, holding a rifle.

Card is a firearms instructor with military training who had recently spent time in a mental health facility, according to a state police bulletin.

This bulletin, shared among law enforcement, reveals that Card received firearms instructor training at a US Army Reserve facility in Maine.

He had been admitted to a mental health facility for two weeks during the summer of 2023 after making threats related to a military training base in Saco, Maine.

State police have issued a warning that Card is armed and dangerous, possibly using a white Subaru Outback for travel between locations. Residents are advised to stay indoors, lock their doors, and report any suspicious activity.

Maine's Governor Janet Mills is closely monitoring the situation and collaborating with local authorities to ensure the community's safety.

US President Joe Biden has also offered federal support and condolences, promising assistance in the wake of this tragic event.
