The state's first Jallikattu event will be held today (6 January) at the Thatchankurichi village in Pudukkottai district.

This Jallikkatu event traditionally used to be conducted by the Arockia Annai Basilica Church on 1 January, but was delayed as the government did not give permission by then.

Around 700 bulls and 300 tamers from all over the state are expected to participate in the event. The registration process is to be done online.

According to the organisers, they had started approaching the district administration and the veterinary department 30 days before the event but they could not get confirmation as the state government did not issue any notification. The government's notification came yesterday (5 January).

The venue has been barricaded and ambulances have been deployed to take those injured to hospitals if necessary.

On 8 December 2022, a Constitution bench of the Supreme Court reserved its judgement in a case against Tamil Nadu's 2017 amendment to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, which allowed Jallikattu by circumventing the Supreme Court's ban imposed in 2014.
