The Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) conducted a fast and candlelight march in Chennai today (21 February) to condemn the attitude of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) towards the death of army soldier Prabhu.

The candlelight march in Chennai started near Omandurar Hospital and ended at the War Memorial.

Prabhu, hailing from Krishnagiri district died as a result of being brutally beaten up by DMK councillor Chinnaswamy and his associates after an argument had broken out between them regarding washing clothes at a water tank. Chinnaswamy is an uncle of Prabhu.

According to Prabhakaran, brother of the deceased Prabhu and also an army soldier himself, Chinnaswamy had said that they may be in the army but they wouldn’t be able to do anything to him.

While DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan said that it was a ‘small thing’, Chief Minister MK Stalin has avoided answering questions on the topic. In a video shared by Republic TV, when a reporter asked Udhayanidhi Stalin as to why was the councillor not suspended from the party, Udhayanidhi kept saying that it is a ‘family matter’ and ‘he has been arrested.’

The programmes saw the participation of a large number of ex-servicemen from the state. Speaking about the tragic death, they said that the loss of Prabhu is like losing one’s family member. They added that in the army, the rank does not matter as all are considered one family.

Annamalai said that members of the BJP would hand over a cheque of Rs 10 lakh to Prabhu’s wife and the party would bear the education expenses of the two children.

After the candlelight march, a memorandum regarding the deteriorating law and order in the state was submitted to Governor RN Ravi by Annamalai and a group of ex-servicemen.
