BJP MP from Bhiwani Mahendragarh, Haryana, Dharambir Singh demanded a law against live-in relationships on Thursday (7 December) during zero hour in Lok Sabha.

Calling live-in relationships "a new disease", he said this "social evil" has come to India from Western countries. Citing Shraddha murder case by his live-in partner Aftab, he said that live-in relationships are spreading hate in our society and destroying our culture.

"The world used to know us for our civilisation and culture, but given the current scenario, this would cease to exist. I request the honourable minister to bring a law against live-in relationships, so that we can end this disease," Singh said.

Not only this, the BJP MP also raised objections to love marriages. Praising the system of arranged marriages, Singh attributed the "low divorce rate of just 1.1 per cent contrary to USA's 40 per cent" to this system.

"The divorce rate is increasing these days. The most prominent reason is love marriage. I suggest that parents' consent should be made mandatory for love marriages. Love marriages are ruining families," he added.
